Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by International Bestselling author, Jonathan Safran Foer Follows the story of Oskar Schell and his adventure in finding the lock that matches the key he found in his dad's room. But the book will get a little confusing, as it will also tell the story of his past generations - Grandfather, father - and everything in between.

Here are my favorite lines:

  • "Sometimes people who seem good end up being not as good as you might have hoped. You know?"
  • "The meaning of my thoughts started to float away from me, like leaves that fall from a tree into a river. I was the tree, the word was the river"
  • "I hoped that one day you will have the experience of doing something you do not understand for someone you love"
  • "So many people enter and leave your life. Hundreds and thousands of people! You have to keep the door open so they can come in! But it also means you have to let them go!"
  • "I miss what I already have, and I surround myself with things that are missing"
  • "You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness"
  • "I regret that it takes a life to learn how to live, Oskar. Because if I were able to live my life again, I would do things differently"
  • "No matter how much I feel, I'm not going to let it out. If I have to cry, I'm going to cry on the inside. I f I have to bleed, I'll bruise. If my heart starts going crazy, I'm not going to tell everyone in the world about it. It doesn't help anything. It just makes everyone's life worse"
  • "It's the tragedy of loving, you can't love anything more than something you miss"
  • "One hundred years of joy can be erased in one second"
  • "If I'd said "I'm so afraid of losing something I love that I refuse to love anything," maybe that would have made the impossible possible."
  • "If I had an answer, it wouldn't really be love, would it?"
